Surge Narrows / Quadra Island Channel Paddle
This trip is for those who have mastered basic paddling, gained some skill with using the paddle to brace and are ready for some of the best fun in paddling. Surge Narrows is a tidal flow between several islands in a channel. The flow generates some very steady standing waves, which make surfing your kayak something that most paddlers can do here.
We teach you how work with the current to traverse from one side to the other (ferrying) in moderate flows. Working on bracing is a natural by-product of these exercises. By the end of the first day, you will be starting to get the feel of the kayak and paddling in flowing water.
The video shows a maneuver that looks easy and actually is, but it depends on the wave being suitable, and getting in the right position on the wave.
It is hard not to experience exhilaration when you get the kayak on to a wave and feel the dynamics in play. Just in case you are thinking "what if..." , well, going for a swim downstream toward the calm water is what comes next if you go over and have not mastered rolling back up yet. One of us will help you get back in your boat, and you will be back in action. Often you end up in one of the large eddies, so paddling back to the action is easy.
Paddling straight upstream against the current is certainly possible some of the time, but there are lots of eddies to make it easier.
There is nothing like a fun day on the water followed by good food and great accommodations. We spend the evenings in a paddling hostel right on the water, not far from the narrows. Keeners can hit the sauna, then jump in the seawater 3 feet from the door, or you can go for an evening paddle between the islands in the calm channels, or just hang out in the lodge by the fire in the wood stove.
